American Golden-Plover (Pluvialis dominica) (1)
- Reported Sep 25, 2024 06:59 by Alex Castelein
- Coal Oil Point, Devereux Beach, Sands Beach, and bluff trails, Santa Barbara, California
- Map: http://maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&t=p&z=13&<q...>,-119.8783064&<ll...>,-119.8783064 - Checklist: https://ebird.org/checklist/S196442543 - Comments: "Continuing, nice find by Lynn Scarlet and ID by Nick Lethaby! First picked up when it flushed from the upper beach, and made a call very distinct from BBPL, a sort of “ko-wee”, though seemed a little different from the recordings I listened to. In flight the overall dusky color with golden speckling and lack of any black in axillaries were obvious. Overall somewhat duskier and a little smaller than BBPL, with smaller bill, mix of yellow and white speckling on back and wings, no black in axillaries, more crisply marked breast. Told from PAGP by overall colder appearance and very long primary projection. Wings extend well past tail and at least 4 primaries extend past tertials. Wings were crossed in a scissor shape with the intersection about where the tail ends. What a nice bird!!"

Long primary projection, pale eyebrow against dark cap, and gray underwings all noted. A bit brighter yellow overall than I would expect for American, but then this is only second good sighting of one I’ve ever had. Heard it give a couple sharp queedle calls in flight. Awesome bird, very accommodating!"

- Comments: "Reported earlier today by Rebecca Coulter. Hunkering down in the sand near a gull flock, a little west of the entrance bridge. Got flushed out to sea for a few minutes but ultimately returned to the same area. Saw the heavily forked tail as it was coming in to land. About half the size of the nearby Royal Terns. Medium gray upperparts, light gray underparts, black crown, white forehead, bicolor bill - mostly black with red on the bottom. Reddish legs. Long tail. Seen with Toby Fowler who got much nicer pics than mine."
