Question. Last week I saw a ruddy turnstone in breeding plumage on south Litchfield Beach. Maps in field guides say that they nest on the northern edges of Alaska and western Canada. eBird maps show a number of recent sightings, a dozen or more, on the SC coast. And online I read that they are seen year-round here in South Carolina. Do they nest late in the season? Why aren't they gone if they are in breeding plumage, or do some nest here also? Seeking clarification. It was a beautiful bird, especially in flight.
