Common Tern (Sterna hirundo) (1) CONFIRMED
- Reported Sep 30, 2019 09:39 by Andy Frank
- Broughton Beach, Multnomah, Oregon
- Map:

- Checklist: https://ebird.org/view/checklist/S60241661
- Comments: "Seen in poor light with it flying away from me. Initially
appeared very light, but at one point it angled and I could see a carpal
bar. Later reviewed several high quality photographs with another observer
who was present and I found them fascinating. On same angles the upper
wings appeared white, without any carpal bar present, and in other
photographs with a different angle, the upper wings are a darker gray and
the carpal bar was very obvious.
It's possible that there have been more than 1 small sterna tern present
the past few days, but Occam's Razor suggests there is just one bird that
can appear very different based on the lighting and viewing angle."

Common Tern (Sterna hirundo) (1) CONFIRMED
- Reported Sep 29, 2019 10:27 by Andy Frank
- Broughton Beach, Multnomah, Oregon
- Map:
http://maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&t=p&z=13&q=45.6003622,-122.6152539&ll=45.6003622,-122.6152539
- Checklist: https://ebird.org/view/checklist/S60214993
- Comments: "Originally entered as a Common Tern with these comments :"Seen
in flight by gull roost area. Uniform pale gray above, black cap, black
bill. Bill seen clearly and too long for it to be Arctic Tern. No white
flash on wings to suggest Forster's Tern."

Report later changed to sterna sp based on private comments I received from
another observer who thought it might have been a Forster's Tern.

Now changing back to Common Tern based on photos taken by a 3rd observer
that shows though bird was pale, there was a carpal bar. Also head pattern
most consistent with Common.

Though it's possible there was more than 1 small tern species present, all
3 of us were there at a similar time."
