Subject: [obol] Benton Coast Range Black Phoebe family?
Yesterday four BLACK PHOEBES were flycatching around a couple of cattle pastures along the Marys River near Wren (off Cardwell Hill Drive), in the eastern Benton County Coast Range.

Two of them appeared to be juveniles, with rusty edges on their wings. The whole group interacted frequently in brief squabbles. By all appearances they seemed to be a family group that presumably nested nearby.

This species has gotten to be regular all along the Willamette River, but I haven't heard of many breeding-season reports from this section of the Coast Range.

WESTERN WOOD-PEWEES are getting to be really conspicuous now, with many perching and foraging along fence lines.

Happy late-summer birdwatching,
Joel
