According to Cornell’s BirdCast website (http://birdcast.info/) Friday night and especially Saturday night will provide excellent conditions for migration in SE Iowa – it should be a great weekend!

Below are the five field trips that will be offered Saturday and Sunday mornings:

Croton Unit of Shimek State Forest

Leaders – James Huntington and Brandon Caswell (Saturday), Dan Rose & Eric Ollie (Sunday)

This large forested area is one of the best places in Iowa to find breeding warblers and other Southeast Iowa specialties. If time allows, we may also visit the Lick Creek Unit or other nearby areas. The trip will include extensive walking along gravel roads and primitive trails. Waterproof boots are recommended for stream crossings. Target Species: Migrant warblers and other passerines, Kentucky Warbler, Yellow-throated Warbler, Blue-winged Warbler, Northern Parula, Yellow-breasted Chat, White-eyed Vireo, Summer Tanager, and Red-shouldered Hawk. Worm-eating Warbler and Bewick’s Wren are possible.

Lacey-Keosauqua State Park & Keosauqua Unit of Shimek State Forest

Leaders – Stuart Sparkman & Karen Viste-Sparkman (Saturday), James Huntington & Brandon Caswell (Sunday)

Lacey-Keosauqua State Park offers miles of hiking trails through pristine upland woodlands. This trip will include a longer hike from Ely Ford along the snowmobile trail into the Keosauqua Unit of Shimek State Forest. Waterproof boots are recommended for stream crossings. Target species: Migrant warblers, vireos, thrushes, and other passerines, Yellow-throated Warbler, Kentucky Warbler, Northern Parula, Cerulean Warbler, Louisiana Waterthrush, and Summer Tanager. Hooded Warbler is possible.

Donnellson & Farmington Units of Shimek State Forest

Leaders – Dan Rose & Eric Ollie (Saturday), Mark Brown & Linda Rudolph (Sunday)

These two adjacent forested tracts are the only known Iowa breeding location for Pine Warbler. The trip will include walking along state forest roads and trails at multiple stops. Target species: Migrant warblers and other passerines, Pine Warbler, Yellow-breasted Chat, Kentucky Warbler, Yellow-throated Warbler, Henslow’s Sparrow, and Broad-winged Hawk. Hooded Warbler is possible but unexpected.

Lacey-Keosauqua State Park

Leaders: Chuck Fuller & Mark Proescholdt

Lacey-Keosauqua State Park offers miles of hiking trails through pristine upland woodlands. This trip will include shorter walks on park roads and trails at multiple stops. Target species: Migrant warblers, vireos, thrushes, and other passerines, Yellow-throated Warbler, Kentucky Warbler, Northern Parula, Cerulean Warbler, Louisiana Waterthrush, and Summer Tanager.

Lake Sugema WMA & Lacey-Keosauqua State Park

Leaders: Chris Edwards & Chris Caster

Lake Sugema is a large man-made lake surrounded by grasslands and shrublands, just south of Lacey-Keosauqua State Park. After visiting several sites around the lake, we'll spend the rest of the morning in Lacey-Keosauqua State Park. This trip will feature short or moderate walks at multiple stops. Target species: migrant waterbirds, sparrows, warblers and other passerines, Yellow-breasted Chat, Bell's Vireo, White-eyed Vireo, Henslow's Sparrow, Summer Tanager, and Yellow-throated Warbler. (NOTE: Fox River WMA and the Mt. Sterling area were removed from this itinerary due to high water and lack of shorebird habitat.)

Hope to see you there!

Hi ALL, Looking forward to seeing you all this weekend.

A couple of things: BRING re-fillable water bottles if you have them. We will have bottles of water and we will collect used ones for recycling.

It has been wet so prepare for muddy walking in some areas. IF it warms up to 70F there will be mosquitoes and ticks, so bring repellant.

The weather looks very good for the weekend ! So the Birding should be great !

Good Birding !
