February was cold, especially the extended period Feb 5 – 19 with highs
19° – 39° (except 56° on Feb 14) and lows in this period were 8° - 32°.
There were at least two mild periods: 1) Feb 2 – 4 and 2) Feb 20 – 24,
with highs of 58° Feb 4 and 53° Feb 23. The last 4 days were mixed high
and low temperatures, but the night lows were mostly in the teens.
Precipitation was 1.89 inches of snow and rain.

There were very low numbers of passerines, especially ground feeders and
woodlandflocks, with some food sources running out.

Many wintering ducks (especially Common Goldeneye and Common Mergansers)
need open water, but also ice to protect them from boaters on Lake
Springfield. Lake Springfield this winter was more difficult to observe
than ever before because of the increase of building on land and in the
water. Local habitat continues to be destroyed and even non-native pines
which provide shelter and a place to roost on very cold nights.

Total field days = 28

Total hours = 197

Total species for February 2019 = 101
