Apologies for the double-post. I feel like a bonehead. My wife, in her infinite wisdom, pointed out that Austin isn’t a county. Whoops. Guess I got so caught up in my bloviating that I forgot Austin was a city and not a county. (And, while is spelled with an “h”.)

So, to hopefully redeem myself somewhat, I’ll add that on Thursday, in our front yard, we had a single Purple Finch amongst a few House Finches at the front sunflower feeder. I had seen several eBird reports of them in the Austin area over the past weeks and had been keeping my eyes open, hoping that one might grace our feeders with a visit. (https://ebird.org/view/checklist/S51262479) Sure enough, one showed up. So, Austinites and those nearby, you might get lucky too!

Greetings all,

I respectfully, yet wholeheartedly, disagree. The mention of a person’s name in a posting, whether that person is political by occupation or not, does not automatically make the content of a posting affiliated with that person’s occupation. How many counties in this state are named after people who have been in political offices at one time or another? Should we also then ban any postings mentioning those county names?

While we’re at it, this listserv is intended primarily for birding-related information, etc. Should we also ban any mention whatsoever of anything that isn’t 100% birding related? I.E. “I was out birding, here’s my list of the 37 bird species I saw. Strangely enough, I also saw a man on a horse playing guitar.” BANNED.

He mentioned a political person’s name, for Pete’s sake. There was absolutely no political bend to the post, as the poster and others have affirmed over and over. (Side-note: I’m completely sure that over the course of history, there’s been a politician by the name of Pete. Should the expression be banned?)

Also, when you say that you “thought we were stopping this”, why did you choose to CC the TEXBirds listserv in your response? You took an email that was intended for you only, and re-posted it to the listserv, thereby re-igniting this discussion.

I very much respect and appreciate you, Susan, and your efforts to make an incredibly diverse and important area open to the public at significant personal cost. So I hope that this isn’t taken personally. It simply was not a political post in any way, in my opinion.

Of birding-related note, the wife and I made it down to Aquarena Springs in San Marcos today, and with it being our first time there we were both pleasantly surprised. We did the glass-bottomed boat tour of Spring Lake which was incredibly interesting and informative, while it also allowed for a bit of birding by boat. Highlights from that trip were a gorgeous Vermillion Flycatcher, multiple feisty Ruby-crowned Kinglets showing off their namesake wile interacting with others, a Ringed Kingfisher, and the overall very high activity level and numbers of most of the birds we saw. The vulture and cormorant roosts were also impressive. A very birdy day, for sure. Link to the full list on eBird is here:

Good Birding all,

I thought we were stopping this—it is a political name and this has always been a site wo politics—issues, yes, but David has kept it apolitical

Using a name of any political name is political, whether I voted for them or not!

You have been asked to stop!!

My personal challenge for 2019 birding will be to attempt "The Full Beto", or to record at least 1 bird in each of Texas' 254 counties. I'm naming this for Beto O'Rourke's feat of visiting all Texas counties for his senate campaign.

Just to keep it interesting I'll also try and set a mark for the most Texas County Ticks in a year. The Total County Ticks is interesting because I've no idea what the mark to aim for is. I can think of a couple of people I suspect have actually done a Full Beto and I'd guess they may have a number up there near 10K for annual county ticks

I did the numbers for myself for 2017 a year with 45k miles of birding in Texas, I had records in 150 counties and 5056 county ticks during the year. Doing the numbers I saw counties I know I was in but just didn't log a bird. Can;t let that happen again.

I recall I read somewhere that the average county was 60 miles across, so 254 x 60 = 15,240 miles minimum to hit all counties, completely doable.

Can I reach 10,000 county ticks? that would be just over 40 species per county average. that sounds hard, there are surely going to be a lot of 5-10 bird counties. I did have 14 counties in excess of 100 species in 2017 so maybe 10K is doable.

Anyone want to go birding in 2019?
