Subject: [pen-bird] North County--Cypress Lawn/Sign Hill 10/21/18

Corrected date in subject , this was today (Sunday 10/21/2018)

>
> Spent the morning birding with Peter J Metropulos at Cypress Lawn Cemetery in Colma followed by a hike around Sign Hill in
> South San Francisco.
>
> Scarlet Eucalyptus trees and other blooming exotics at Cypress Lawn attracted big numbers of Yellow-rumped Warblers. We estimated around (200!) almost all Audubon's and among them (2) Myrtle Warblers and (3) that looked like intergrades. Watching one flock coming down to the ground, Peter spotted a (Western) PALM WARBLER soon joined by a second Palm Warbler. While we watched the two Palm Warblers a LARK SPARROW dropped down from a Palm tree and we watched the three birds foraging in close proximity. However, to date, I've still to see a Palm Warbler in a Palm Tree.
>
> Another awesome sighting was watching a "visually pure" male YELLOW-SHAFTED FLICKER squaring up and squabbling with a Red-shafted.
>
> Other interesting birds at the cemetery were a (mostly)Red-breasted Sapsucker, (5) Western Bluebirds, (Gray-headed)Orange-crowned Warbler.
>
> After that we headed up to Sign Hill. On the north side we observed (4, 3f and m) hatch-year NORTHERN HARRIERS flying around in close proximity. Peter wondered aloud if harriers might still be nesting here as he documented them doing 21 years ago in June with a food-carrying adult. This would make Sign Hill in South San Francisco the most northern breeding outpost on the Peninsula for this California Species of Special Concern, unless they've managed to escape detection on San Bruno Mountain proper.
>
> We also met and briefly spoke with Del Schembari of San Bruno Mountain Watch who informed us that the portion where the harriers nested is not yet preserved as open space and part of longtime conflict between preservationists and developers.
