> Comments: In seemingly arctic conditions we set out along the West Loop path from Whipple Bridge. Within 50 yards, Naomi picked out a Fox Sparrow as it dropped and then knew where to look when it popped up again and posed in various positions before dropping out of sight. As her report was titled, VF had much duckage today, which was just ducky with those assembled. Green-winged Teal were "mine-sweeping" all over the place and Black Ducks and Mallards also had high numbers. It was great to see so many ducks less than a week after the preserve was closed for duck hunting. Highlights were 3 hen Gadwalls, a pair of Pintails, a brace of N Shoveller hens, Wood Ducks and a lone Greater Scaup drake. We got to enjoy watching a Sharp-shinned Hawk hassle a Red-tailed Hawk and wonder at the latter's apparent coolness under fire. After the walk out, the smaller birds largely disappeared. It was fun to watch a Blue-headed Vireo, a Ruby-crowned Kinglet and a few Yellow-rumped Warblers work the canal walls and attached shrubs and vines. A Purple Finch sat out in the open and a Carolina Wren called loudly. A Greater Yellowlegs flew right over our heads calling loudly and shot straight up the main waterway.
> Alas, I petered out before the end of the main group's walk and heard later that I missed the Hermit Thrush. Despite the frigid weather (think North Dakota) it was an enjoyable time of observation and camaraderie.
