*SALEM AUDUBON SOCIETY ANKENY WILDLIFE REFUGE SCOUT*
*SUNDAY OCTOBER 7, FOR FIELD TRIP, OCTOBER 14, 2018*
Fred Stephens, Kay Fagan and myself were joined by Roy Gerig on this
coolish, cloudy day of drizzle. Nice day with no wind. The berms behind the
gates are now off limits for protection of wintering waterfowl species. It
is this time of year we make the rounds to pullouts and grassy field areas
and take advantage of the productive apple trees, which offer bugs as the
fruit breaks down, some fruiting berries, raisins from the blackberries and
crab apples crowded into the hedgerows for passerine species. Of the sites,
Pintail Marsh has water and nice mudflats and is a draw for photographers
because of raptors. Pullouts have expected grassy fields, wet from today
but few and sparse field ponds or mud. No American Pipits but one AMERICAN
BITTERN stepping out of grass reeds far side, across from the Pintail
Raptor species included BALD EAGLE - adult and Sub-adult, young
NORTHERN HARRIER, young RED-SHOULDERED HAWK that we enjoyed studying,
RED-TAILED HAWK, and AMERICAN KESTREL.
Sparrow species included, a very bright SAVANNAH, vocal SONG,
LINCOLN, GOLDEN and WHITE-CROWNED, DARK-EYED JUNCO, SPOTTED TOWHEE and FOX
At one point at Pintail we observed from over the Marsh, with lineup
on the wires, and the cornfield across, *as many as 700 swallows. *We
determined all species below except for Cliff or Northern Rough-winged were
present; keeping in mind the vocals and that many were young birds.
We were pleased to see WESTERN BLUEBIRD and ACORN WOODPECKERS which
are regular on the hill above the Liberty and Buena Vista junction.
Shorebirds included LESSER YELLOWLEGS with its straight dark bill,
yellow legs and smaller and shorter stature present and comparable as
observed with the 2 GREATER YELLOWLEGS, LONG-BILLED DOWITCHER, LEAST
SANDPIPER,and a *single* DUNLIN.
We had Coyote close by, gazing inquisitively at us, and many Nutria
