Observation start time: 10:00:00 Observation end time: 17:00:00 Total observation time: 7 hours
Official Counter: Mitch Mitchell
Observers: Dan DeHart, Darryl Martin, King Irvin, Randy Doss
Visitors: Also helping count were Phillip Ferguson, Bill and Katie Adams and Randy Doss. Dave Bergouie who frequents the knob on his day hiking excursions visited for a good while.
Weather: Day started with the overlook completely socked in with fog that finally lifted enough to see the western valley around 12:30. Warm day that had us seeking shade with temps ranging from 23c to 29c.
Raptor Observations: First bird of the day was a Cooper's hawk at 12:50 and the last bird an immature bald eagle at approx. 3:30. Two more immatures at 2:12 and 2:37. The final eagle had lit in the top of a pine tree just to the right of the overlook and then flew into a tree below the overlook not to be seen again for the rest of the watch.
Non-raptor Observations: Dragonflies and gnats were plentiful at various points of the day as well a several monarchs. Parkway traffic was fairly light for a holiday weekend Friday and most passed the overlook without driving through. No AT hikers today.
Predictions: If you're early to the overlook on Saturday you may get a chance to see that immature eagle take flight for the day. Weather looks to be more of the same temperature wise. ======================================================================== Report submitted by stan Mitchell (<mitchmitchell7...>) Harvey's Knob information may be found at: http://bijame.googlepages.com/home
