I have seen Loons around St. Louis in early June. A few stragglers are always possible. The lakes in the far north stay frozen a long time

They were probably en route north, perhaps a group that had wintered near the Texas/Louisiana coast. If they were indeed immatures, they probably aren't in a hurry to establish territory up north.
But, all that must be taken with great caution. I may be a bit loony, and once anticipated the next lake an Arctic Loon in Colorado would be found after it left where it had been for a few days, but that does not make me an expert on loon psychology.

Was on Bull Shoals lake near MO/AR border when we spotted 6 common loons together. 4 looked juvenile but we couldn’t get close enough for pictures just binoculars very skittish birds.
I had never seen Loons other than Wintering. Could they have bred here? And why would 6 be together if not?
