April is the cruelest month – T.S. Eliot.

It was mostly cold in April 2018, until April 11, when a warm spell
occurred. However, most of the month was plagued by Northeast winds,
maybe an off shoot of the Polar Vortex. This put many species of birds
behind schedule. The warmest temperature was 83° on April 12 and the
coldest low was 16° on April 2. Some lows were in the 30s to the end of
the month. The early warm spell sent some birds north, but then it was
colder and several species showed one or two individuals early and then
a large gap before the next individuals of the same species occurred.
The vegetation lagged way behind the last several springs and insects
were scarce. Warblers and other insectivors were very scarce but some
came to suet feeders such as Pine and Yellow-throated Warblers. The
biggest movement of passerines occurred April 30. The precipitation was
2.18 inches, but it was enough to bring up lake levels to ruin shorebird
areas. It snowed three times in April 2018.
