Subject: IBET Tuesday, 8 May: JxP to Calumet
Tuesday Dan Lory and I birded the south lake front from Jackson Park to the Calumet area covering the Wooded Island/Bobolink Meadow area of Jackson Park, with brief stops at Rainbow Beach, Park 566 and Steelworkers Park, then 126th Street Marsh, Big Marsh, Indian Ridge Marsh and Eggers Grove. It wasn't so great a day of migration along the south lake front but we managed to find 98 species, including a couple nice finds.
In the Wooded Island area our best finds were a male CANADA WARBLER (FOY) at the little board walk near the driving range and a male BLACKBURNIAN WARBLER in the trees south of there. A 1st spring RED-HEADED WOODPECKER (FOY) was at the south end of Wooded Island. A singing ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER by the Darrow Bridge and a male BLACKPOLL WARBLER in the parking lot near by were FOY birds, too. By the time we got to Rainbow Beach, Park 566 and Steelworkers it was midday, getting warm and we only added a few species. 126th Street marsh didn't have anything of note. Things were a bit more interesting at Big Marsh. As we approached the overlook of the marsh 14 AMERICAN WHITE PELICANS rose up from the marsh and began to circle over us to gain elevation. It was quite a sight! We had come here for shorebirds but the water was a little high and we only found 6 GREATER and 4 LESSER YELLOWLEGS. However, as I was watching them, a COMMON GALLINULE walked out of the vegetation. Shortly another appeared near by. I hadn't seen a Common Gallinule for 8 years in Cook County, or anywhere since 2015. We also heard a few SORAS and a VIRGINIA RAIL here. At Indian Ridge Marsh the water levels seemed good but there were only 1 Solitary and 2 Spotted Sandpipers here. We did flush an AMERICAN WOODCOCK along the path. Eggers Grove was disappointing for Passerines with the best find being a female ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAK. On the marsh was a male GADWALL and on a clump of cattails was a drake REDHEAD. I'll try to post the results of the Jackson Park portion of the SBC in a day or two. The full list for Tuesday is below.
