Hello Maxine,
Gray-cheeked and Swainson’s Thrushes are the most common migrants this time of year, with grayish backs. The Swainson’s is more abundant. Hermit thrushes are also possible but tend to migrate earlier.
allaboutbirds.org gives you some good comparison photos.

Good birding,

Juliet Berger

Subject: [birders] small thrush question

Hi,
I had a small thrush in my backyard yesterday, with a grayish back, and spectacular spotted chest.
Does anyone know what it's likely to be, migrating (I assume) through an Ann Arbor backyard?
thanks,
Max
