I’ve spoken to Paul Girard, Collections/Natural Areas Specialist at Matthaei, and he tells me (as Bob Grese told me earlier) that all of the roof vents actually have screens on them, and it would be an arduous process to remove one or 2—might not be done until mid to late summer. So she’s getting out through the open glass, only to be repelled by the screen. He is going to try to leave a door open into the staff work area, and then more doors open to the outside, in hopes she will find her way out. Otherwise, in the next several weeks, we may need to try to get Allen Chartier, our resident Hummingbird expert, out to capture, band and release her. As we spoke, Paul Girard was watching her flying around the ceiling looking for a way out.

Subject: Re: [birders] Matthaei Botanical Gardens Conservatory Hummingbird
Hi, I saw the hummingbird back in the cactus section of the conservatory on friday April 27. In prior weeks, I'd seen her in all three sections of the conservatory and also watched her flying out and back in through the open vents in the roof in the cactus house.
Here's to spring! Rosemary

I looked and I looked for her for quite awhile (I'm assuming she was in the greenhouses by the desk and store area) but did not see her today.

I spoke with a front desk person at Matthaei today, when I was out at the Gardens, and she referred me
to a Horticultural specialist, whose email address she provided. The desk clerk seemed to recall seeing her a week or two ago.
I'll contact him, but no one seems to know what's up with the hummingbird.
