While I also think Janet used proper etiquette while viewing the owl, I'd like to thank Mike for the reminder to be considerate around snowy owls. A few years ago there was another snowy, in the same general area, on the corner of Kennedy and Salt roads. I lived on Kennedy Road, and probably passed the snowy perched on a telephone pole, at least a hundred times. I did not report its location, but after 6 weeks or so, the report came up on this list. (The bird had already been captured there, and tagged.) Almost instantly, there was a constant traffic jam, with cars parked on both sides of Kennedy and Salt Roads. One day I came home and there were 19 cars parked there, and a large group of people in the street watching the bird, many within 30 feet of the pole he was on. I stopped to listen to the people speaking. Many had seen the report on this group list, and were talking about it. Everyone took a million photos. Then a woman told everyone to get their cameras ready for flight pictures, because she was going to approach the pole and flush the bird! Which she did, and then a man collected droppings, to see what the snowy had been eating. I was appauld at this behavior, but said nothing, because.....who am I? I thought the people were knowledgeable ornithologists from this list. I think about that disrespectful display all the time. Clearly, these viewers had no idea that what they were doing, wasn't acceptable birding behavior. It wasn't long before the snowy disappeared. Please take care when viewing these magnificent birds. If there are several cars around, come back later, stay in your car, and on the road. Maybe he'll stay around longer, so that more people can see him, if he isn't disturbed. Thank you Janet, for being careful and considerate. Kathy

"
I think Mike was just putting out the reminder to all :)
