Spent the last 4 days conducting some of my monthly surveys for the East Cascades Audubon Society’s Winter Raptor Survey Project. All of the area from Hwy 34 south to Priceboro Rd near the Lane County border and from the Willamette River east to the foothills of the Cascades was covered along with the northern part of Benton County which includes EE Wilson State Game Refuge and the landfill area along Hwy 99. Following are the results of the surveys, with January's results in ( ) and December’s results in [ ] for comparison.
Linn County Unit 4 which covers everything south of Hwy 228/American Drive through Halsey and from the Willamette River east to the foothills of the Cascades south of Brownsville. Survey date was 2-17-18 and 130.6 miles was covered in 8 hours 50 minutes. It was a windy day with up to 25 mph gusts and periodic rain squalls throughout the day. Deanna Emig, who surveys wintering geese populations in the Willamette Valley for ODFW, accompanied me on this survey.
Linn County Unit 3A covers the area south of Hwy 34 down to Hwy Hwy 228 / American Drive and from the Willamette River east to I-5. Survey date was 2-19-18 and 96.0 miles was covered in 7 hours 55 minutes. It was mostly sunny all day with winds 5-10 mph and temps in mid 30s, no precipitation.
Linn County Unit 3B covers the area south of Hwy 34 down to Brownsville and from I-5 east to the foothills of the Cascades. Survey date was 2-18-18 and 74.7 miles was covered in 6 hours 7 minutes. It was a windy day with winds out of the south from 5-10 mph and periodic snow squalls throughout the survey. Jim and Carol Hiler accompanied me on this survey.

Benton County North covers the area north of Hwy 20 along Independence Hwy, ODFWs EE Wilson State Game Refuge, the areas north and west of the landfill, and along Hwy 99 north to the Polk County line. Survey date was 2-20-18 and the 47 miles was covered in 4 hours 6 minutes. Temps were in the mid to high 30s with winds from the south 3-5 mph and snow flurries during the first hour of the survey.
