David Moon and I led today's Wednesday Morning Birding program out of Joppa Flats Education Center on to Plum Island, starting at the north end. As you know, the weather was fabulous -- resulting in many fair-weather birders joining us for the outing. Skies were clear to partly cloudy, temps into the low 70s, and winds NW-SW/10-20 mph.
Our list: Canada Goose - common. Gadwall (3) - pannes. American Black Duck - common. Mallard - a few. Northern Pintail (11) - 8 drakes, 3 hens; Bill Forward Pool. Common Eider - common; n. end & seven ocean. Surf Scoter (1) - one ocean. White-winged Scoter - common. Black Scoter (7) - one ocean. Long-tailed Duck (~ 25) - 13, n. end; ~ 12, seven ocean. Common Goldeneye (~ 19) - 7, n. end; ~ 12 seven ocean. Red-breasted Merganser (1) - n. end. Common Loon (2) - 1, n. end; 1, seven ocean. Horned Grebe (2) - Emerson Rocks, seven ocean. Bald Eagle (1) - over Salisbury, from n. end. Red-tailed Hawk (5) - 2, n. end; 2, vicinity lot #1; [1, PI Tpk]. Herring Gull Great Black-backed Gull Rock Pigeon Mourning Dove Snowy Owl (3) - 1, distant in marsh w. refuge gate; 1, not as distant in marsh sw main panne; 1, in & on Emerson Rocks (!) - eventually flew with prey as tide rose (photos taken - hope to ID prey, which was bird with head absent). American Crow - several. European Starling Snow Bunting (~ 60) - feeding on ice (!) at s. end main panne. Red-winged Blackbird (~ 12) - treetops, S-curves. Common Grackle (1) - parking lot #1.
