Subject: [texbirds] 100 species this morning and some (locally Good) birds in Eagle Lake area , Colorado County
Texbirders:Tony Frank, Drew Dickert and I found 100 species in an inland county (Colorado County) this morning (78 of which on Calhoun rd), some of which of potential interest to Houstonians or TOS Century Clubbers.................. 50 LAPLAND LONGSPURS, some in partial breeding plumage with chestnut collars on Spalinger rd. 1.8 miles south of FM3013 on west side near road--quite near road (continuing Thanks Dennis Shepler!).....8 HORNED LARK in same area as Longspurs...........three WHITE-TAILED HAWKS, two WHITE-TAILED KITES--and a PEREGRINE FALCON in air on the various nearby rice roads in the acute angle between FM 1093 and FM 3013.................50 BRONZED COWBIRDS at Mexican restaurant/apartment on both sides of US90A in Eagle Lake at 29.578909,-96.32332...................................2 VERMILION FLYCATCHERS on (short) Lakeview Road-- One male Next to US flag on flagpole next to house with windmill. One at NW end of Lakeview rd. in tree near inlet and driveway...............
.......Of the 78 species on the 8 miles of Calhoun Rd. moving counterclockwise from intersection with Wildlife Drive......................female GREEN KINGFISHER in creek along Calhoun between the wooden old fashioned covered bridge next to road at 29.574660, -96.369317 and where creek crosses road at recently flooded under-repair bridge..........................LEAST GREBE in quarry lake just west of Calhoun rd viewed and heard from gate through large bushes near but bnot exactly at 29.567681, -96.384007..................3 COUCH's KINGBIRD's, PURPLE MARTINS and two other Swallow species above larger quarry lake west of Calhoun seen from about 29.563509, -96.383763......................bright female YELLOW-HEADED BLACKBIRD with 25,000 other blackbirds--mostly brown-headed cowbirds near two quite large bright yellow waste grain disposal piles a few miles further on--piles right near road blackbirds should be obvious as also right near road.....................a bit further along 3,00
0 SNOW/ROSS's GOOSE right near road--labelled CR79 in Google and easy to see from car (but no Cackling nor Canada geese all day Drat!).................3 LADDER-BACKED WOODPECKERS rattling at various locations all along Calhoun road.................and finally 1 male RED-BREASTED NUTHATCH seen and heard at creek crossing at 29.520950, -96.344064. ............................................................Nice birdy morning--we actually had just 98 species before barbecue lunch at converted gas station in Eagle Lake but added 2 more common species at brief stop at Eagle lake Municipal Park to reach 100.
