There were few winter finches nor half- hardy stragglers in December
2017. Most berries were gone by the last half of the month and waxwings
and most Robins departed.

December 2017 was fairly mild until December 24 (when the high dropped
to 26°), but earlier there were 3 daily highs in the 60s, 9 days in the
50s and 5 days in the 40s. The lowest low was -9 on December 27 and by
December 31 the high was 7°. Also it was dry in Sangamon County with
only 0.37 inches of precipitation- mostly snow. It was also windy with
the average 26 mph. Humans continued to mow and destroy food resources
such as acorns through most of December.
