WDFW temporarily closes Fir Island birding area to repair dike
OLYMPIA The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) will close public access to the Fir Island Farms Reserve Unit Jan. 8 through Jan. 26 for minor dike and viewing trail repairs.
"There will be large rock- and earth-moving equipment on site to repair the public access portions of the dike," said Belinda Rotton, Skagit Wildlife Area manager, "Due to the location of the work area, it's essential we restrict public access for everyone's safety."
The Fir Island Farms Reserve Unit is a popular spot for bird watching and walking. The 225-acre site was purchased by WDFW in 1995 to create an upland snow goose reserve. Located on the south end of Fir Island, about three miles from Conway, the snow-goose reserve is part of WDFW's 16,700 acre Skagit Wildlife Area.
