Subject: [Va-bird] Diving mallards
In Maine I have often seen black ducks dive. All summer and early fall long, not just occasionally. In fact, decades ago I was told by a Mainer they were diving ducks, and was surprised many years later to discover they were considered dabblers. Clearly black ducks are not mallards, but very like mallards. Perhaps similar behavior, though I personally have never seen a mallard dive.

The Glaucous gull at Occoquan Overlook park is showing nicely. No sign of Iceland yet but gulls are trickling in.

Like Marshall, I also had a large flock of at least 36 Chipping Sparrows,
foraging up close in my backyard this morning--they clearly separated
themselves from the many White-throats, and fed right under my floor to
ceiling windows.

Down here in Boone NC Mallards in the New River were diving under but
not deeply today and we surmised that they were going under to warm up.
The air temperature was around 5F while the water was 27 degrees warmer
or so. Just a guess though.

I wonder if the coastal nor'easter snowstorm pushed the Chipping Sparrows to
the northwest from their Carolina wintering grounds?

I drove down to the Sandy River Reservoir this afternoon, but the Greater
White-fronted Geese were a no-show. There were no more than 10 Canada Geese
when I was there and they didn't stay long (possibly because of hunters).
The Horned Grebes and Common Goldeneyes were still there, however. Most
were quite far out on the water. Totals were as follows (most numbers are
appropriate):

1. Blue Jay - 1
2. Greater Scaup - 10
3. Bald Eagle - 1 (immature. At times standing on the ice, circling the
reservoir, and calling)
4. Hooded Merganser - 31
5. Ruddy Duck - 12
6. Ring-billed Gull - 15
7. Bufflehead - 6
8. Redhead - 1 (male)
9. Gadwall - 12
10. Common Goldeneye - 2 (females)
11. Common Loon - 3 (one standing on the shore by the bridge. First time
I've ever seen one on land)
12. Belted Kingfisher - 1
13. Horned Grebe - 2
14. Red-breasted Merganser - 12
15. Yellow-rumped (Myrtle) Warbler - 2
16. American Crow - 1
17. Song Sparrow - 1
18. Canvasback - 30
19. American Black Duck - 8
20. Mallard - 150
21. Great Blue Heron - 1

(the ABDU's and the MALL's were all at the end of Gates-Basse Road)

Continuing cold weather keeps bringing in the rarities.

- Stopped briefly at frozen Wilck's Lake this morning only to see a MUTE
SWAN land on the ice in the middle of the lake. Bird stayed for several
minutes resting on the ice before heading south. This species was last seen
in the region at this location in early December 2015.

- No sign of the Greater White-fronted Geese at Sandy River Reservoir, but
there are still tons of ducks. The lake is more frozen than yesterday but
plenty open water remains. Flock of RED-BREASTED MERGANSERS and three
COMMON GOLDENEYES were the main waterfowl highlights.

- High Bridge Trail State Park yielded the second or third regional winter
record for PALM WARBLER.

- Ended the day at Sailor's Creek Battlefield State Park with an up close
look at a brave SAVANNAH SPARROW.
