I saw the Barrows Goldeneyes at the scrape pond at Finley NWR today (Sunday) around noon. They were very accommodating and conspicuous,

A juv. male/female type BAGO continues at the Scrape Pond on Bruce Rd. in W.L. Finley NWR, closely associated with female BUFF. Seen this morning by Pete Kappes, Tyler Hallman, and I.

I was actually wondering if it might not be a juv. male. Thanks for your input, Wayne!

Hi -

Looks a lot like Barrow's but I think it might be a juv. male.  It is beginning to get a bit of white on the throat, which is where juv. male goldeneyes usually start getting adult-like plumage.  This is the period when many juv. diving ducks are beginning to show male plumage.  I think the bill color is less unusual for a male, particularly since a female Common normally would show a yellow bill tip.

Hi all,

A very likely female BARROW'S GOLDENEYE has been hanging out on the scrape pond along Bruce Rd. for several days now, associated with a female Bufflehead. Head shape, bill shape, and wing pattern with limited white (compared to Common Goldeneye) are all consistent with Barrow's. The only slightly odd feature is the bill color, which is solid gray, with no trace of yellow usually found in Barrow's. But young Barrow's have all gray bills, so I don't think an all-dark bill rules out a pure Barrow's here. Nothing else suggests a hybrid to me.

A few photos can be found in my eBird list: http://ebird.org/ebird/view/checklist/S41383378

This is a very good bird for Benton County - only a small handful of previous records.

Happy Birding!
