Subject: [obol] Ona Beach sapsucker is a hybrid
In my opinion, the sapsucker at Ona Beach looks like a hybrid.
Characteristics that rule out pure Red-naped include a bit of red and
yellow on the upper breast; red crown and nape that bleeds over into the
supercillium; and a messy, unclean face pattern typical of hybrids.
Apparent out-of-range sapsuckers (Red-breasted in far eastern Oregon or
Red-naped in western Oregon) should always be scrutinized for signs of
hybridization.

Cheers,

Chris Hinkle
