Turns out today's Red Crossbill count was not only exceptional for the lakefront (record high) but the second highest for the state. According to Brock database, high count was 75 at Deam Lake, Clark Co., November 11th, 1981 by Brainard Palmer-Ball.

Thanks to Brendan and Jeff for sending to the list serve. For other birders that are going to try for the birds the best strategy for the day was to park in the lot just east of the entrance booth for the park. You can then listen for the Red Crossbills and watch the pines on the ridge to the north as well as the pines that are around the parking lot. They seemed to be moving around a lot but would eventually return to the area. Best of luck to everyone.

There are currently 40 plus Red Crossills circulating amongst the White Pines near the entrance gate. -- Jeff McCoy Columbia City, Indiana
