Weather: A very pleasant day with mild SE breezes, 9.0-12.7C temp, and very clear visibility. An entirely all blue sky for the whole day (so tough!).
Raptor Observations: A good day with 10 raptor species and some great views of uncommon birds. Most raptors were flying fairly low today. An awesome Northern Harrier day with seven including four adult males. An immature Northern Goshawk flew close and low down the east side of the gap at 8:52am. 3 Bald Eagles (adults at 10:10 and 10:18 and one 3rd-YR at 4:14). A distant Eagle out to the west at 2:52 was on edge and disappeared southward without presenting any field marks so remained unidentified. We were able to squeeze out a 3-Falcon day with great views of all three species and a good count of 4 Merlins. The immature Peregrine (1:52pm) flew straight through the gap below eye level! First Raptor: 8:48 NH, Last Raptor: 4:14 BE.
Non-raptor Observations: Some interesting non-raptors today highlighted by a flock of 30 Rusty Blackbirds flying through the gap this morning, and a Grasshopper Sparrow down by the old ice skating rink. Other birds counted migrating over included: 6 Wood Ducks, 13 DC Cormorants, 1 YB Sapsucker, 3 Flickers, 2 GC Kinglets, 139 Waxwings, 2 Yellow-rumped Warblers, 1 Field Sparrow, 100 RW Blackbirds, 25 Cowbirds, and 17 Goldfinches. 29 Monarch Butterflies. ======================================================================== Report submitted by Gabriel Mapel (<birdmangabriel...>) Rockfish Gap Hawk Watch information may be found at: http://www.rockfishgaphawkwatch.org
