This is the Voice of the Naturalist, a service of the Audubon Naturalist
Society. This report covers the week starting Tuesday, October 17 and was
completed on Tuesday, October 24 at 3:40 p.m.

Information on noteworthy birds is presented below in taxonomic order, as
set forth in the American Ornithological Society Checklist for North and
Middle American Birds, as revised through the 58th Supplement (July 2017).

The top bird this week were BROWN BOOBY* in MD and WESTERN TANAGER in VA.

Other birds of interest this week included waterfowl, COMMON GALLINULE,,
shorebirds, PARASITIC JAEGER, COMMON TERN, BROWN PELICAN, TRICOLORED HERON,
WHITE IBIS, hawks, ASH-THROATED FLYCATCHER, LOGGERHEAD SHRIKE, PHILADELPHIA
VIREO, SEDGE WREN, kinglets, PINE SISKIN, sparrows, warblers, PAINTED
BUNTING, DICKCISSEL and BOBOLINK.


TOP BIRDS

A BROWN BOOBY* returned to the Baltimore Harbor, MD on October 15 and was
seen this week on October 17, 18 and 20. It appears that a good way to see,
and sometimes photograph it, is to take the Water Taxi from Locust Point.

A WESTERN TANAGER was at the Camp Pendleton State Military Reserve
(restricted access) Virginia Beach, VA on October 21.

OTHER BIRDS OF INTEREST

Three TRUMPETER SWANS were at Tenthouse Court, Anne Arundel Co, MD on
October 22. Two SNOW GEESE were at Back Bay NWR, Virginia Beach, VA on
October 21. A CANVASBACK was at Greenbury Point, Anne Arundel Co, MD on
October 17. Two WHITE-WINGED SCOTERS were at the Occoquan Bay NWR, Prince
William Co, VA on October 18.

Up to 5 COMMON GALLINULES were at the West Ocean City Pond, Worcester Co, MD
on October 18, 21, 22 and 23.

Eleven to eighteen BLACK-BELLIED PLOVERS were at the Swan Creek dredge
containment facility, Anne Arundel Co, MD on October 18. Three more
BLACK-BELLIED PLOVERS were at Eastern Neck NWR, Kent Co, MD on October 22.

Shorebird highlights included: two RED KNOTS at Back Bay NWR, Virginia
Beach, CA on October 21 and a WILSON'S PHALAROPE was at Bombay Hook NWR,
Kent Co, DE on October 21.

One to three PARASITIC JAEGERS at the Cape Charles Coastal Habitat NAP,
Northampton Co, VA on October 17, 20, 21 and 23. Another PARASITIC JAEGER
was at the Back Bay NWR, Virginia Beach, VA on October 23.

A COMMON TERN was in Ocean City, Worcester Co, MD on October 20.

Three BROWN PELICANS were on Bodkin Island, Queen Anne's Co, MD on October
20,

A TRICOLORED HERON was at Grandview NP, Hampton Co, VA on October 21.

WHITE IBIS were noted in large flocks during the week. A maximum of 103
WHITE IBIS were at Assateague Island NS, Bayside, Worcester Co, MD on
October 21 and 22. One WHITE IBIS was at Point Lookout SP, Saint Mary's Co,
MD on October 20 and seven WHITE IBIS were a Truitts Landing, Worcester Co,
MD on October 22. Another six WHITE IBIS were at Cape Henlopen SP, Sussex
Co, DE on October 23.

Two ROUGH-LEGGED HAWKS were reported from the Kiptopeke Hawk watch,
Northampton Co, VA on October 21. A GOLDEN EAGLE was reported from the Cape
Henlopen Hawkwatch on October 18. Another GOLDEN EAGLE was seen from Chino
Farms, Queen Anne's Co, MD on October 22.

An ASH-THROATED FLYCATCHER was at the Back Bay NWR, Virginia Beach, VA on
October17 and 18.

The two remaining LOGGERHEAD SHRIKES were seen at the Smith Farm in
Lunenburg Co, VA on October 18 and 20. Another LOGGERHEAD SHRIKE was seen
October 23 at Innisfree Village, Albemarle Co, VA on October 23.

A PHILADELPHIA VIREO was seen October 18 at Back Bay NWR, Virginia Beach,
VA.

A SEDGE WREN was seen at Cornfield Harbor, Saint Mary's Co, MD on October18.

GOLDEN-CROWNED and RUBY-CROWNED KINGLETS were reported from many venues
during the week.

A PINE SISKIN turned up at a feeder in Virginia Beach, VA on October 17.

Sparrow migration continued to grow in the area with many reports from
numerous locations. CHIPPING SPARROWS turned up in many places. A
CLAY-COLORED SPARROW was in Rickman/Woodstock Equestrian Park, Montgomery
Co, MD on October 21.Two CLAY-COLORED SPARROWS were at the Back Bay NWR,
Virginia Beach, VA on October 18 and 21. Another CLAY-COLORED SPARROW was at
the Chincoteague NWR, Accomack Co, VA on October 21. A VESPER SPARROW was at
the Beltsville Agriculture Research Center (BARC), Prince Georges Co, MD on
October 19 and 20. Another VESPER SPARROW was on St. Louis Ave, Ocean City,
Worcester Co, MD on October 21 and yet another VESPER SPARROW was at
Chincoteague NWR, Accomack Co, on October 22. A LARK SPARROW was on St.
Louis Avenue, Ocean City, Worcester Co, MD on October 20. GRASSHOPPER
SPARROWS were found in many places including two at the Rickman/Woodstock
Equestrian Park, Montgomery Co, MD on October 19. A NELSON'S SPARROW was on
Poplar Island, Talbot Co, MD on October 18. A NELSON'S SPARROW was on Ragged
Island WMA, Isle of Wight Co, VA on October 23. FOX and LINCOLN'S SPARROWS
were also found in profusion during the week.

Several warbler species were seen this past week including A TENNESSEE
WARBLER at Snug Harbor Park, Anne Arundel Co, MD on October 20;
ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLERS at Milltown Landing, Prince George's Co, MD on
October18 and the Davidson Farm Lane area, Queen Anne's Co, MD on October 20
and a CONNECTICUT WARBLER at Sand Road Park, Anne Arundel Co, MD on October
21.

A PAINTED BUNTING was at Berlin Falls Park, Worcester Co, MD on October 17.
DICKCISSELS were seen in several places, including: two at Perryman Park,
Harford Co, MD on October 17; one at the Howard Conservancy, Howard Co, MD
on October 20 and one at Meadowbrook Park, also Howard Co, MD on October 21.

BOBOLINKS were also reported from many areas during the week.
