A friend sent:

MOPL observed on Carpinteria beach at the end of Holly Street from 9am-1pm.
The posture upright regularly bobbing to perfectly upright. It was very
bold (photos taken on my phone). There were no birds for comparison but
seemed killdeer sized, or smaller. The back seemed solid in color at first
glance, but through bins the feathers were clearly rufous edged. Light
rufous on all upperparts including cheeks. Legs were grayish and long.
