Subject: APPALACHIAN CROSSBILLS (TYPE 1) NEAR SHORES LAKE, OZARK NF
Matt Young at Cornell has finished reviewing audio recordings of Red Crossbills on the Shortleaf Pines ridges above Shores Lake in Ozark NF. David Oakley and I found them on September 11. I returned on September 15 with UA-Fayetteville graduate students Anant Deswhal and Pooja Panwar. They collected audio recordings. We all managed to obtain a few images.
Matt Young’s analysis is from the recordings on September 15. The birds vocalizing are Appalachian Crossbills (Type 1). As far as I know these are the first Appalachian Crossbills documented for Arkansas. Of course most crossbill sightings over the years have not included audio. We will discover more about which crossbills are visiting Arkansas as we obtain more audio recordings. That’s just another way of noting this is a story only now unfolding.
I just posted an ebird record with a photo. I think Pooja is going to post a more fulsome record and including recordings.
