keeps them off the lake.

*White Pelican* – only one bird at Marine Pt all month.

*Double-crested Cormorant* – HC = 100 (Aug 25).

*Great Blue Heron* – HC = 23 (Aug 4).

*Great Egret* – HC = 18 (Aug 27).

*Snowy Egret* – fall arrival immature at south end LSpfld (Aug 16)- photo.

*Little Blue Heron* – fall arrival at south end LSpfld (Aug 4 -16) -%
same bird - photo.

*Green Heron* – HC = 4 (Aug 10 & 14).

*Mute Swan* – present.

*Canada Goose* – HC = 160 (Aug 25).

*Wood Duck* – HC = 23 (Aug 4).

*Green-winged Teal* – fall arrival at Sangchris (Aug 20) – late.

*Am. Black Duck* – a ♀at Marine Pt (Aug 25).

*Mallard* – HC = 245 (Aug 4), includes # at WP.

*Blue-winged Teal* – fall arrival 2 at Buckhart (Aug 5), w/ HC = 50 (Aug
18).

*N. Shoveler* – fall arrival 6 at LSpfld (Aug 18).

*Turkey Vulture* – HC = 45 (Aug 24). FirstHY of the year noted at RSP
(Aug 15).

*Osprey *– two singles at LSpfld (Aug 1 & 30).

*Bald Eagle* – HC = 2 (Aug 6), w/2 immatures and 4 adults seen in Aug.

*Sharp-shinned Hawk* – fall arrival at south end LSpfld (Aug 31)

*Cooper’s Hawk* – HC = 2 (Aug 26), birds seen on 15 days.

*Red-shouldered Hawk* – HC = 2 (Aug 31). Seen at Marsh Road (Aug 5, 12 &
27), at Refuge (Aug 31) and at CP/ RSP (Aug 10, 26 & 31).

*Broad-winged Hawk* – fall arrival at Southern View (Aug18).

*Red-tailed Hawk* – HC = 5 (Aug 5), a few hy seen.

*Am. Kestrel* – HC = 6 (Aug 5).

*Merlin *– fall arrival at Marine Pt (Aug 30).

*Turkey *– HC = 6 (Aug 21).

*N. Bobwhite* – last one calling (Aug 5).

*Am. Coot* – only one at LSpfld (Aug 3).

*Baird’s Sandpiper* – fall arrival at Cinder Flats (Aug 11), w/ HC = 3
(Aug 23).

*Pectoral Sandpiper* – HC = 10 (Aug 21).

*Stilt Sandpiper* – fall arrival 4 immature at Sangchris (Aug 18).

*Wilson’s Phalarope* – fall arrival immature at Cinder Flats (Aug 26).

*Laughing Gull – *dark juvenile at LSpfld until (Aug 3).

*Ring-billed Gull* – HC = 320 (August 27).

*Lesser Black-back Gull* – adult at LSpfld (Aug 15).

*Caspian Tern* – HC = 85 (Aug 9) – birds observed every day of this month.

*Common Tern* – one at Beach (Aug 17)

*Forster’s Tern* – HC = 6 (Aug 22).

*Black Tern* – fall arrival 5 at LSpfld (Aug 6), w/HC = 10 (Aug 22).

Rock Dove - present

*Eurasian Collared-Dove* – only 3 singles (Aug 5, 12 & 27).

*Mourning Dove* – HC = 57 (Aug 27) – rather scarce.

*Yellow-billed Cuckoo* – HC = 4 (Aug 2 & 10).

*Common Nighthawk* - fall migrants 3 at Spfld (Aug 21), w/ HC = 6 (Aug
28 & 29).

*Chimney Swift* – HC = 40 (Aug 8) – low #.

*Ruby-throated Hummingbird* – HC = 8 (Aug 23).

*Belted Kingfisher* – HC = 3 (Aug 2 & 26).

*Red-headed Woodpecker* – HC = 13 (Aug 7 & 28). Total birds for Aug =
226 (136 adults & 90 hy). Seen every day w/ many repeats.

*Red-bellied Woodpecker* – HC = 12 (Aug 26). Total birds for Aug = 228
(165 adults & 63 hy). Seen every day w/many repeats.

*Downy Woodpecker* – HC = 8 (Aug 11).

*Hairy Woodpecker* – HC = 2 (5x in Aug).

*N. Flicker* – HC = 5 (Aug 1 & 28).

*Pileated Woodpecker* – HC = 3 (Aug 26 & 28).

*Olive-sided Flycatcher* – fall arrival at WP (Aug 22), w/ one other at
WP (Aug 29).

*Cedar Waxwing* – fall migrants 10 (Aug 18), w/ HC = 16 (Aug 26).

*Bell’s Vireo* – HC = 2 (Aug 13, 19 & 27).

*Yellow-throated Vireo* – HC = 2 (Aug 25), this species definitely
declining.

*Warbling Vireo* – HC = 6 (Aug 23).

*Philadelphia Vireo* – fall arrival at RSP (Aug 31).

*Red-eyed Vireo* – HC = 6 (6x in Aug) – low counts.

*Blue-winged Warbler* – fall arrival 3 at RSP (Aug 24).

*Golden-winged Warbler* – fall arrival ♀ at RSP (Aug 23), w/ HC = 11
(Aug 30).

*Tennessee Warbler* – fall arrival 4 at RSP (Aug 23), w/HC = 28 (Aug 30).

*Nashville Warbler* – fall arrival RSP (Aug 24), w/HC = 2 (Aug 30).

*N. Parula* – HC = 3 singles between (Aug 11-26), nesting population low.

(Aug 26 - 31).

*Black throated Green Warbler* – fall arrival 2 at RSP (Aug 30).

*Blackburnian Warbler*- fall arrival at RSP (Aug 24), w/ HC = 7 (Aug 30).

*Yellow-throated Warbler* – two at the beach on a fence w/ Chipping
Sparrows (Aug 22) and one at Lin Gds (Aug 29), nesting population low.

*Bay-breasted Warbler* – fall arrival 2 at RSP (Aug 30).

*Black & white Warbler* – fall arrival 5 at Marine Pt (1) & RSP (Aug
23),also w/HC = 5 (Aug 24 & 30).

*Am. Redstart* – fall arrival im♂ at RSP (Aug 15), w/HC = 12 (Aug 23 & 30).

*Prothonotary Warbler* – HC = 3 (Aug 24) w/ last one (Aug 30).

*Ovenbird* – fall arrival at North Pt (Aug 23).

*Northern Waterthrush* – fall arrival at RSP (Aug 31) – late.

*Common Yellowthroat* – HC = 8 (Aug 8).

*Wilson’s Warbler* – fall arrival at RSP (Aug 26), w/HC = 2 (Aug 30).

*Canada Warbler* – fall arrival at WP (Aug 17),w/ HC = 2 (Aug 24 & 30).

*Yellow-breasted Chat* – last detected 2 at CP (Aug 7).

*Summer Tanager* – HC = 2(Aug 23)- few found.

*Scarlet Tanager* – HC = 2 (Aug 11, 25 & 25), few seen.

*N. Cardinal* – HC = 18 (Aug 30).

*Rose-breasted Grosbeak* – only 2 singles (Aug 1 & 20) – very poor #.

*Blue Grosbeak* – HC = 4 (Aug 2), found on 8 days in August.

*Indigo Bunting* – HC = 12 (Aug 5) – lower # again!

*Dickcissel* – HC = 8 (Aug 1), seen only 4 days in Aug – mowing
eliminates many birds.

*E. Towhee* – HC = 7 (Aug 14).

*Chipping Sparrow* – HC = 18 (Aug 22).

*Field Sparrow* – HC = 11 (Aug 25).

*Vesper Sparrow* –only one on (Aug 1).

*Lark Sparrow* – one east of Spfld (Aug 6).

*Savannah Sparrow* – fall arrival? At Sangchris (Aug 25).

*Henslow’s Sparrow* – two ♂ still singing at Marsh Road (Aug 5) – area
mowed soon afterward!

*Song Sparrow* – HC = 8 (Aug 22), with # dropping due to molt August 23.

*Red-winged Blackbird* – HC = 50 (Aug 20) – poor # all summer.

*E. Meadowlark* – only 3 singles between (Aug 1 – 13) – a declining
species.

*Common Grackle* – HC = 20 (Aug 1) – poor # all summer.

*Brown-headed Cowbird* – HC = 10 (Aug 17).

*Orchard Oriole* - % last seen ♀ at Lin Gds (Aug 14).

*Baltimore Oriole* – HC = 5 (Aug 18, 20 & 24) – no large migration, many
cherry trees without berries.

*House Finch* – HC = 27 (Aug 7).

*Am. Goldfinch* - HC = 12 (Aug 27).

House Sparrow – present.

*Eurasian Tree Sparrow* – HC = 26 (Aug 12).

Total field days = 31

Total hours for August 2017 = 238

Total species for August 2017 = 151.

Weather hot on 11 days (85° or above) with the high temp 92º on August
20. It was somewhat cooler on 20 days (84° -75°) with lows in the 50°on
14 nights. It was dry with total rain 1.60 inches in August.

No mudflats for shorebirds in the county, with all sloughs and fields
dry. Black Cherry Trees without much fruit and not many acorns yet. Many
areas damaged by early mowing. Lots of disturbance from boaters, people
with dogs and people getting exercise. Blackbirds inexplicably very low
in numbers (due to GMO corn?)
