Observation start time: 11:00:00 Observation end time: 15:00:00 Total observation time: 4 hours
Official Counter: Rod Chase
Visitors: Observers: Wendy and Bob Heppler helped at start and Steve Farrell stayed until 1pm (EST).
Weather: At 11am: 62F/17C, West wind 0-5mph/0-8kph, 40% overcast with sm. cumulus, Visibility 20mi/32km. Temp was stable as much larger cumulus rolled in; by noon 80% o/c and 90% by 2pm. After 12:30 several small patches of rain moved north of us about 5 but miles out; Visibility reduced to 5mi/8km from NW-NE. One dark cloud passed overhead and then poured on S. Monoosnuc Hill just east of the mountain. The temp dropped to 60F/17C between 1 & 2pm. End result was most birds migrated on S side of hill in PM.
Raptor Observations: Most flights near eyelevel, winds lighter but cold, wet air and heavy clouds kept thermals to a minimum all afternoon. Brighter to east so nominal lift available on that side. Kestrel (male adult) hassled 2 ravens relentlessly for over 5 minutes. Quite a show.
Local raptors: RT 2, TV 6, Merlin 1.
Non-raptor Observations: Other locals: 8 ravens up and, with few visitors, we had several Juncos foraging on the observation deck.
Predictions: Saturday Isolated showers after 1pm. Increasing clouds, with a high near 65. North wind around 8 mph. ======================================================================== Report submitted by Rod Chase (<rodchase...>) Wachusett Mountain information may be found at: www.massbird.org/emhw
