Birdwatchers Wanted: Experienced to Beginners.
Big Day of Birding on the Norwalk River Valley Trail
Calf Pasture Beach to Grist Mill Road, Norwalk, CT
September 16, 2017
Volunteer birdwatchers will form teams to explore the sections of the Norwalk River Valley Trail in Norwalk from 6 AM – Midnight on Saturday, September 16, 2017. The goal is to identify the maximum number of bird species on the day of September 16. This is known in the birding world as a Big Day.
Birders of all experience levels are welcome. Volunteers will rate their birding experience on a scale of 1 – 10; 10 is an Expert Birder, 1 is a Beginner. Teams will be organized to mix more experienced birders with less experienced birders. This is a great chance to improve your birding skills.
The goal is to get lots of people out enjoying the beauty of Norwalk’s natural world, the Norwalk River Valley Trail, and the beautiful birds adorning our world.
The Norwalk Hour and the NRVT are promoting the idea. The first twenty-four volunteers will receive a free, 12 oz. bag of Birds & Beans, the Bird Friendly Coffee. A check list of birds will be provided.
Interested birdwatchers should contact Charlie Taney, the NRVT’s Executive Director at <ctaney...><mailto:<ctaney...> no later than Thursday, September 14th at 5 PM. Charlie will organize the teams and assign each team a section and time frame. For example: your team might be assigned the NRVT section from Calf Pasture Beach to the Maritime Aquarium from 6 AM – 9AM.
The team leader will report back to Charlie by email on the bird species they spotted no later than midnight on the 16th.
The results will be compiled by mid-day on September 17. There will be a Birds & Beans coffee gathering at I PM on September 17 at the Norwalk Hour offices at 301 Merritt 7. Each team’s results will be announced, as well as the overall number of bird species, and the most unusual bird species
