Subject: [IN-BIRD-L] Goose Pond FWA shorebirds Western sandpiper, juvenile dunlin, Hudsonian godwit
The raptors made the morning's DNR shorebird field trip exciting for 11 participants. See comments below in MPE checklist. After lunch, Bob Meier, Lee Sterrenburg, and I noted a fair amount of turnover in shorebirds in MPW. 15 species and 490 individual shorebirds were found on the day. Besides the raptor show, highlights were American golden-plovers, Hudsonian godwit, Western sandpiper, and a juvenile plumaged dunlin.

Comments: Disturbance b water l. DNR fall shorebird field trip. Parked at north end, walked over ruined bridge and south along east levee to view shorebirds in MPE4.

We had an amazing raptor show in MPE4. First, a peregrine falcon was seen hunting teal, and T'd up in a snag for everyone to get scope views. Later, an American kestrel spent time in another snag (scope views), and was also seen diving on a distant hunting peregrine. Most spectacularly, while watching a group of pectoral sandpipers inside the unit, a merlin come from out of nowhere and just barely missed catching a pec. Afterwards, the merlin T'd up in a snag and everyone had scope views. So we had scope views of 3 falcon species in one sub-unit at Goose Pond FWA - pretty spectacular!
