I think it's a good year for Baird's, based on how many we have been seeing along the South Coast beaches.

SB Birders,

Yesterday 9/5/17 at the Santa Maria Sewage Works, I saw what I believe was 9 Baird's Sandpipers. The first group of 6 were in the drying beds and I saw 3 additional Baird's in the more southerly basins. To be sure I was not over counting I returned to the drying beds to find the 6 Baird's still hanging out. I also saw 2 Spotted and one Solitary Sandpipers. The Lesser Yellowlegs remains at about 25. They were difficult to count one by one this visit. Also of note? A decent push of Semipalmated Plovers has arrived this week, I feel confident that I counted close to 28 Semipalmated Plovers. The numbers of Western and Least Sandpipers were up too. There are still a few of each Wilson's and Red-necked Phalaropes hanging out. The duck numbers are still rising with N. Shovelers starting to out number the other ducks.
I checked out Jack O'Connell Park, birdless. I then moved over to the SMRE and I saw a influx of Semipalmated Plovers along with Western and Least Sandpipers. I counted 48 Canada Geese, I am sure I missed a few. I do not recall seeing these geese this season. Lastly, my highlight was seeing 400+ Brown Pelicans around the estuary mouth.
