TOP BIRDS

A likely first MD record SHARP-TAILED SANDPIPER* was photographed Aug
29 – Sep 1 at Swan Creek Wetland, Anne Arundel Co MD. Swan Creek was
closed Sep 2-4, but the bird was seen again early Sep 5. Probably in
Alexandria VA (but possibly also in SE DC waters of the Potomac R), a
SABINE'S GULL was seen Sep 4. Early on Sep 5, it was clearly in DC
waters. This could be a first record for both DC and VA.

OTHER BIRDS OF INTEREST

Out-of-season ducks included a RING-NECKED DUCK continuing Aug 31 &
Sep 1 at Hurlock WWTP, Dorchester Co MD, and a RED-BREASTED MERGANSER
Aug 31 and Sep 1 in Sussex Co DE at the VFW Quillens Pt. Hurlock WWTP
hosted 13 RUDDY DUCKs on Aug 30 and Sep 1, and single RUDDY DUCKs were
spotted on Aug 30 at the Easton WWTP (Talbot Co MD) and at Swan Creek
Wetland on Sep 3.

At least one NORTHERN BOBWHITE was heard Sep 4 in St Mary's City, St
Mary's Co MD.

Four MISSISSIPPI KITEs were reported Sep 1 over Lake Braddock Dr,
Burke VA (Fairfax Co).

Small numbers of BROAD-WINGED HAWKs were reported by the mountain hawk
watches, with a possible increase occurring at week's end with 23
reported by the Rockfish Gap Hawk Watch on Sep 4. Along the coast,
only one BROAD-WINGED HAWK was reported, at Kiptopeke Hawk Watch on
Sep 4.

SANDHILL CRANEs were reported at widely separated places: one Aug 30
at Bombay Hook NWR, and three Sep 1 at Mosser Rd Marsh in Garrett Co
MD.

On Aug 29, a single HUDSONIAN GODWIT was spotted in Oakwood Drive Pond
in Rockingham Co VA. On Aug 30, eight HUDSONIAN GODWITs were seen at
Swan Creek Wetland; at least three remained there early on Sep 5.

Swan Creek Wetland hosted a single WILSON'S PHALAROPE and 4 RED-NECKED
PHALAROPEs on Aug 30. A single RED-NECKED PHALAROPE was seen Sep 2 at
Sandy Pt SP, Anne Arundel Co MD.

A handful of BONAPARTE'S GULLs were scattered over central MD, both
Eastern and Western Shores of Chesapeake Bay.

A couple of GOLDEN-WINGED WARBLERs were seen in rather unexpected
places: a female on Aug 30 at Turkey Pt Light Station, Cecil Co MD,
and a male on Aug 31 in Rock Creek Pk, NW DC. Several single
CONNECTICUT WARBLERs were seen: one on Sep 1 at Greenbury Pt in Anne
Arundel Co MD and one continuing Sep 1 at Cromwell Valley Pk,
Baltimore Co MD.; on Sep 3 at Cromwell Valley Pk and at
Conway-Robinson St Forest, Prince William Co VA; and Sep 3-4 at Blue
Mash Nature Trail, Montgomery Co MD. An early (late?) YELLOW-RUMPED

Likewise either early or late, a WHITE-THROATED SPARROW was in a
private yard in Prince George's Co MD on Sep 3.
