Following up on my What'sApp post, I tried to see the Frigatebird from Shelter Island with binoculars but couldn't make it out.
However, at 11am the large trawler Rival passed by the bait docks with tons of birds around it, and sure enough there was a Frigatebird perched on a wire on the boat. I have some terrible distant photos. Its back was toward me so it just appeared all dark, but the shape and bill were distinctive.
It rode the boat as it headed into the bay, rounding North Island.
In other news in Imperial Beach this am: the Baird's Sandpiper continues at Surf Camp. On the beach south from Seacoast Dr. two Brown Boobies were plunge-diving close to shore. And there was a Large-billed Savannah Sparrow on the beach.
