Subject: [IN-BIRD-L] Goose Pond FWA shorebirds
This morning and afternoon an Indiana Audubon Society field trip sought shorebirds at Goose Pond FWA, Greene County. Ultimately, 17 shorebird species and 477 individuals were recorded (although six species were represented by just a single individual). The most numerous species were pectoral sandpiper (173) and killdeer (145). The highlight was two buff-breasted sandpipers that were very cooperative for the entire group in GP4.

Although we struck out on godwits, Mark Welter did relocate one Hudsonian godwit this morning, as well as a sanderling, in MPW. So 19 shorebird species were recorded on the property today (but not seen by the same party). Peregrines and eagles were shuffling the deck frequently, leading to heavy turnover in birds that were visible or hidden behind vegetation in MPW.

Baird's Sandpiper 1 juvenile, on a small mud flat with a flock of pectoral sandpipers. nice comparison between species. A big peep. The Baird's was smaller and more attenuated in shape due to the long wings. At times the primaries were crossed. The primaries stuck out past the tertials and looked very pointy and dark in our scope views. The breast was buffy but not a sharp bib like the nearby pectorals. Black legs. Have poor photos
