Subject: [sd-birds] Shorebirds and Black-billed Cuckoo - Lake Andes NWR
I birded for 4.5 hours today - mostly at the Lake Andes NWR in Charles Mix county. It was very bird-y and I recorded 91 species of birds. I finally saw my nemesis "year bird" - the Black-billed Cuckoo. The refuge had a nice group of shorebirds on the west side of the north unit. You can see which shorebird species I observed below on my condensed eBird checklist.

There were large flocks of Yellow-headed Blackbirds, swallows and American White Pelicans. There were many distant gulls, but I didn't see anything different. The ducks are looking strange as they work through eclipse. There were more Red-tailed Hawks around too and I suppose much of this is due to young birds leaving the nest.

I will attempt to upload photos onto my Flickr site tonight, but until then you can view my Black-billed Cuckoo photos on my BirdTeach Facebook page. https://www.facebook.com/BirdTeach-367011353690070/

While at my mom's in Turner county the other day, we saw a female Wood Duck leave the nest box. This is the third brood for that nest box this year.

My checklist from today is below.
