Greetings everyone;  I have posted here only a very few times.  I enjoy reading all the posts because it still gives me dreams of getting out there to look for these birds that I long to photograph so I can share them with others.  Unfortunately I can no longer even see most of the birds.  The point I'm trying to make is you can not let the ravings of idiots ruin your enjoyment of posting your findings so you can share with others the rare, or common birds you see.  The real birding world needs everyone to post their findings, so everyone gets the chance of seeing the good findings..  Young birders learn from your posts.  Young birders grow o be ecologists, conservationists, old birders, etc. Keep the cycle going don't let the fools ruin it for everyone.  The politicians are already trying to do that.  Please keep posting what you see.  If it is a particularly endangered species, just don't give the exact location, except privately to a few that you know will respect the birds sensitive nature.
Take care and God Bless;   David Farber www.naturallyfarberphotos.com <raptorfoto...> http://theworldfromachair.blogspot.com/

In regards to this King rail thing. This is why I stopped posting almost three years ago. There are some pretentious blowhards out there who like to throw around their expertise, or lack of it, in public, and belittle others (so as to build up their own egos?). I had people, who assume they are experts and others are not, publicly doubting whether I really saw what I reported. I had people questioning whether I was trespassing on private property. (???). My point is it that it is not fun to interact with pretentious people and people who publicly demean others in order to boost their own credentials in public (In politics this how you see who the idiots are). I still read the posts to see if there is something I can use but, IBET has lost my resources because of a few people who can't seem to get past their own self-importance. How many other birders are lost to IBET because some jerk  publicly called them out for some perceived mistake (WAH!).

Although posting a state endangered species is unethical, EVERYONE makes mistakes and Henry had no clue that King Rails are state endangered.

I appreciate reading Steve's and Keith's posts. I just want to say that posting on IBET exactly where an endangered species is located is not necessary for scientists who are looking for information  -- you can report that information directly to the scientists themselves. Maybe i can put together a list sometime of some of those folks, for example, the head of the Illinois Endangered Species Protection Board, etc., and hey, you've got Steve's and Keith's emails right here.
That might be beneficial information for all to have as well as the list Steve included of all the T&E species in the state.

All best

  Steve,

All valid points and thanks for sharing. I know you know, we can e-mail, call, write, shout, however we wish to communicate and many folks still won't get it. I know the T & E species in Illinois as part of my job as well, but despite that, many of those on the list are safely observed and even photographed by many birders without causing any harm. For example, I don't plan on NOT telling people where LITTLE BLUE HERONS and SNOWY EGRETS are foraging. I really don't have any intel on where they are nesting and IF I did, yes, I would not post the location of the nests.

I'm not disagreeing with anything you've stated, I'm just stating that if ALL information about the location of these T & E species in Illinois is withheld then how would researchers and avid birders like you and I even know about them? Some information shouldn't be shared with some people, but the great thing about IBET, eBIRD, and IBF (when we had it) is that news and information about the birds we all love is being shared by the community for all of us to enjoy, no matter what our purpose. The sighting information, the photographs, all of that, is essential to eBIRD data, to seasonal reports in Meadowlark (plug for IOS!) and North American Birds (plug for ABA)!

If we all practice good ethics in our birding endeavors, our example, hopefully, is emulated in the newer generation of birders we lead. That's the best we can hope for!

I'm just curious if we can expect an "after-the-fact" story about the rarity in Chicago? I would love to hear more about it.

Good birdings,

Amazingly, after putting a post up on IBET just two days ago on the morals, ethics (& laws) in relation to birders actions with breeding threatened and endangered species in Illinois, someone puts up a post giving exact directions to a state endangered King Rail AND their small young! Seriously! Just the kind of thing that you DON'T want to do. I know that there are a lot of birders in this state that just want to make another check mark on their life lists, and don't really want to know or learn much of anything else about the birds that they seemingly enjoy, but the least that they could do, would be to learn the 31 species of state threatened and endangered birds... and act appropriately after they've found one. That's not much to have to ask for is it? You might also want to learn a little more care and ethical behavior when discussing such species on a public forum like IBET. So, I've taken the time to list those species, below. And please don't give out exact directions to another threatened and endangered species and their young. Good ethical/moral birding.
