5 purple finches on my feeders yesterday, 3 male, 2 female. I have been
seeing less than 5 on and off over the past week or so and again this
morning. I'm in Loch Alpine near Dexter.

Hi Ron. Once you see purple finches I think the difference is fairly
obvious. I noticed yesterday that I could tell just from a distant
silhouette. The purple finch is more 'rotund' overall and the house finch
relatively 'skinny'. Maybe check out some on line images to compare. Female
purple obvious with white eye stripe. Males have no dark streaking on lower
flanks and more raspberry purple all over the back and upper chest.

Cheers,
John Mills
