A HOODED MERGANSER with 8 black downy chicks (shifting groups - sometimes 4 on her back and 4 in her wake), in the Potomac River near the MD shore 100 feet upstream from the lock. I had not seen so many chicks or chicks riding on a hen's back. two COMMON LOONs were also in the Potomac at C and O Canal between Violette's Lock and Riley's Lock this morning 4/17/17.
A smattering of singing warblers Parula, Yellow-throated, Yellow-rumped, Black-and-white, and ruby crowned kinglets.
