Date: 4/13/17 1:10 pm From: Sargent, Bob <bob.sargent...> Subject: [GABO-L] Camp TALON for Young Birders - Register Soon
Young Birders and Their Parents:
There are only three slots left in Camp TALON #1 (June 3-8, 2017). The deadline is May 5th. Register your teenager soon! The second camp (June 17-22) has been cancelled.
The registration form for Camp TALON (Teen Adventures Learning Ornithology and Nature) is available at http://www.georgiawildlife.com/CampTALON. This is a six-day event for young people ages 13-17 (older teens may be eligible) who are interested in birds and nature. Sponsored by the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, TERN, the Georgia Ornithological Society, the Atlanta Audubon Society, and the GA Natural Resources Foundation, this camp is based at Epworth by the Sea on St. Simons Island. We'll be birding many of Georgia's coastal "greatest hits" including Altama WMA, Harris Neck NWR, Ft. Stewart, Okefenokee NWR, Sapelo Island, Andrews Island, Altamaha WMA, St. Simons Island, and Jekyll Island. Visit the website to see the itinerary. Teachers for the camps all have 20+ years of experience as professional biologists, ornithologists, and teachers working for the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, GOS, The Nature Conservancy, the Department of Defense, or for two of Georgia's universities.
Besides becoming a better birder, camp participants will learn about bird migration, conservation, census techniques, photography, journaling, song identification, and more. Students do not need to be experienced birders; they just need to be serious about birds and the outdoors. If you live inland and are wondering how you'll be able to bring your son or daughter to the coast for the camp - don't worry. A bus will pick up inland camp participants in Macon, will take them to the camp, and will return them to Macon in the late afternoon on the last day of each camp.
The camp costs $500, which includes meals, lodging, and transportation from Macon. Previous campers who are older than 17 may be eligible to attend as an intern.
