David Moon and I led Wednesday Morning Birding from Joppa Flats
Education Center on to Plum Island for a fun morning of birding. There wasn't any rain, but the weather was damp and raw under overcast conditions, temps in the upper 30s, and winds light to 5 mph out of the north to northeast. We started at the north end of the island and worked our way down to Sandy Point.
Our list for the morning:
Brant (~ 20) - 10, Sandy Point; ~10, Emerson Rocks (w/ beach now closed, seen from Bar Head). Canada Goose - common. Gadwall (3) - pr, small pannes; 1, Stage Island Pool. American Black Duck - common. Mallard - many. Green-winged Teal (2) - pr, Bill Forward Pool. Ring-necked Duck (2) - pr, BFP. Common Eider (~ 35) - ~ 15, n. end; ~ 20, Emerson Rocks. White-winged Scoter (6) - 3, n. end; 1, one ocean; 2, Bar Head ocean. Black Scoter (6) - one ocean. Long-tailed Duck (9) - 2, n. end; 6, one ocean; 1, Bar Head ocean. Bufflehead (4) - BFP. Common Goldeneye (3) - n. end. Red-breasted Merganser (~ 19) - ~ 7, n. end; ~ 12, pannes. Wild Turkey (8) - BFP. Common Loon (9) - 5, n. end; 4, Bar Head ocean. Double-crested Cormorant (~ 6) - various. Great Egret (5) - 1, BFP; 1, marsh e. PI River, n. PI Tpk; 3, marsh w. PI River, s. PI Tpk (seen from PI). Osprey (3) - 1, circling high over marsh n. main panne; 2, on Pines nesting platform. Piping Plover (22!) - 14, Sandy Point; 8, lot 7 beach, seen from Bar Head (I think we hit the migration!). Killdeer (4) - [2, PI Airfield]; 2, main panne. Sanderling (1) - Sandy Point, feeding with plovers. Purple Sandpiper (~ 15) - Emerson Rocks. Ring-billed Gull (~ 40) - "kettling" above marsh, w. main panne. Herring Gull Great Black-backed Gull (7) - various. Rock Pigeon Mourning Dove - many, n. end. Downy Woodpecker (1) - s. S-curves. Eastern Phoebe (1) - s. end pannes. American Crow (~ 5) American Robin (1) Northern Mockingbird (2) European Starling Song Sparrow (~ 5) - various. Red-winged Blackbird (~ 8) - various. Common Grackle (~ 25) - n. end.
