Subject: [Maine-birds] seal in Gardiner too - RE: swallows- mergs-FOY Osprey and corms

Forgot to mention that there was a Harbor Seal poking his head up in the river right off the Gardiner landing too. I know that people sometimes see them up this far and further in the river but this may be the first one I’ve seen here in Gardiner.

Just took a lunchtime walk down on the trail that extends south from the Gardiner landing. Highlights were:

- at least 340 Common Mergansers, most north of the bridge;

-a group of 42 Tree Swallows trying to tough it out in the sleet at the mouth of Cobbossee Stream. No younger brown-backed birds among them and they seemed to be scooping something up from the water’s surface;

-female American Kestrel that came diving in at the swallows at one point then perched on a light pole for a bit;

-pair of Bufflehead (don’t see them in the river here much) and a Ring-necked Duck;

-FOY for me for here DC Cormorants (3);

-and the welcome sight of a FOY for here Osprey on the perch beside Dunkin Donuts where there is usually an Osprey most of the spring and early summer. Wonder if it just arrived back from South America and what its winter backdrop was like as compared to here!
