Date: 2/27/17 8:06 am From: Jack Smiley <jackrsmiley...> Subject: [birders] (OT) URGENT ALERT: Proposed Sale of Wayne County Parkland, meeting tonight
As if things aren't bad enough in Wayne County, County officials are considering the sale of *250 acres* of prime public park land along the Rouge River: the Warren Valley Golf Course. This public recreation site, with ample wetlands, floodplain and river corridor, has been a staple of life since 1922. The golf course has long protected the Rouge River and its floodplain in the Middle Rouge Parkway (along Hines Drive) and it provides significant natural habitats for wildlife and people alike. The County is proposing to sell it to make way for another housing subdivision, ostensibly citing a recent operating deficit at the golf course.
County officials persuaded voters to enact a dedicated parks millage, which generates about $10 million each year, to fund recreational opportunities. They also promised that the millage would be used to buy additional park land. Not only has that not been the case, but they are now proposing yet another sale of public park land.
Dearborn Heights officials are hosting a town hall style meeting to gather public sentiment about the proposed sale. That meeting is tonight at 7:00 p.m.
Please attend and let your voice be heard.
