Subject: [Ohio-birds] Inland Rare Birds, Nov 17 - 22
Now winter starts to fight for its appearance, as we see successive cold
fronts battle with rainy warm fronts. It’s a crappy time for birds, but a
great time for birders if you can stand the weather. This is when waterfowl
and boreal species start getting pushed south into our area, while
startling laggards show up at feeders or migrant traps.

Black-bellied Whistling Duck – a flock of 7 was reported north of
Evansville IN 11-21, while Riverlands Sanctuary MO had 1 on 11-18 & 19

Brant – none currently in our area, with the closest in the eastern basin
of Lake Erie at Dunkirk NY harbor thru 11-22

Ross’s Goose – still birds around Chicago, both at the lakeshore (thru
11-22) and suburban Yorkville (thru 11-19)

Greater White-fronted Goose – still lots in IL and western IN; to the east,
Lake Erie MetroPark MI had one 11-17, as did Mansfield OH.

Eurasian Wigeon – none in our area, but the nearest is in Madison WI thru

rare elsewhere, given the surge in reports from earlier in the month. Birds
persist around Erie Marsh MI 11-17, Geist Reservoir IN thru 11-20, and
Illinois Beach St.Park thru 11-22

White-winged Scoter – also most reported from the central basin of lake
Erie, but less frequent than Surf. Strays reached the Wellington OH
Upground Reservoir 11-22 and Gary IN lakeshore the same date.

at Eastwood MetroPark (Dayton) OH thru 11-22, 1-2 at Geist Reservoir IN
