Short-eared Owl (Asio flammeus) (1)

- More Mesa, Santa Barbara, California

- Comments: "Continuing bird, with the first fall 2024 report for More Mesa yesterday by Alex Castelein. Sunset was at 4:51 PM, but we didn’t see the Short-eared Owl until 5:12 PM, when it made at least six flights between then and 5:22 PM when it was getting too dark to see. We watched from this location on the west side of the mesa (34.421356, -119.800098), as the owl hunted approximately 100 yards east of there. Besides the 4 observers on this list, Florence Sanchez, Adrian O’Loghlen, and Pam Viale were also present for part of the time.

This was a medium sized owl, dark above and light below, flying low above the ground with a buoyant, stiff-winged, moth-like flight on wide rounded wings. The chest and head appeared blocky, with a blunt, concave face."
