Hi all - to follow up on Margaret's email -

Many other counties will indeed need help getting winter surveys done. My region (Ridge and Valley) has a number of blocks to be done in '24-25. If interested - contact me about possible blocks in Blair, Cambria, Mifflin, Bedford, Somerset, Huntingdon, Fulton (with the latter being good for 24-25).

One minor point - the nocturnal survey for the winter atlas is encouraged but not "mandatory".
But related - Great Horned Owls are already eligible for "possible" breeding code again beginning Dec 15.

Subject: PA Winter Bird Atlas- Priority Blocks are available

Hello Birders

Snow in the air is a reminder that the winter atlas is just around the corner. The PA winter atlas starts on December 1. For an overview see https://ebird.org/atlaspa/about/winter-atlas/<https://nam10.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Febird.org%2Fatlaspa%2Fabout%2Fwinter-atlas%2F&data=05%7C02%<7CSCBIRDCL...>%7C567d7d5ecd574490d6dc08dd0b243781%7C7cf48d453ddb4389a9c1c115526eb52e%7C0%7C0%7C638678972351723363%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJFbXB0eU1hcGkiOnRydWUsIlYiOiIwLjAuMDAwMCIsIlAiOiJXaW4zMiIsIkFOIjoiTWFpbCIsIldUIjoyfQ%3D%3D%7C0%7C%7C%7C&sdata=q8LezKf9jCUhlrgcbS3wC62WaJ3jhKrj3GlXAsN7eno%3D&reserved=0> or you can go to the youtube channel and see Amber’s webinar https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UOPd6CSObUU<https://nam10.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.youtube.com%2Fwatch%3Fv%3DUOPd6CSObUU&data=05%7C02%<7CSCBIRDCL...>%7C567d7d5ecd574490d6dc08dd0b243781%7C7cf48d453ddb4389a9c1c115526eb52e%7C0%7C0%7C638678972351723363%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJFbXB0eU1hcGkiOnRydWUsIlYiOiIwLjAuMDAwMCIsIlAiOiJXaW4zMiIsIkFOIjoiTWFpbCIsIldUIjoyfQ%3D%3D%7C0%7C%7C%7C&sdata=0AyVo%2BH%2B02x1nfXExXFuGb1BQPLPVJN%2F4zq1Jypt3X4%3D&reserved=0>

For Centre County, we have two blocks that need a principle atlaser for this winter:

48D26 Snowshoe SE SE- North-east of Yarnell.

61B56- Houtzdale SE – SW corner of county, includes SGL 60

These are priority blocks for the 2024-25 winter. Completing a block entails surveying the block for at least 6 hours, split evenly between the early and later winter periods; conducting at least two 1-hour surveys (one in early winter, one in later winter); and conducting at least one nocturnal survey. Please let me know if you are interested and available to be the winter atlaser for one of these blocks. Note, you can commit to just this winter or you can sign up as principal atlaser and conduct breeding season surveys within the block also. Either one is fine.

For all birder’s, if you currently enter data into ebird, please switch to the PA Bird Atlas portal by December 1 so that your data can be counted, and please be sure you start a new check list when you enter a new block. Data submitted in the regular ebird portal is not automatically available to the PA atlas.

Note, many of the surrounding counties also have blocks that need to have winter surveys completed. Thanks
