Greater Scaup (Aythya marila) (2)
- Reported Nov 20, 2024 11:57 by Alex Castelein
- UCSB--Campus Lagoon, Santa Barbara, California
- Map: http://maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&t=p&z=13&<q...>,-119.845165&<ll...>,-119.845165 - Checklist: https://ebird.org/checklist/S203129904 - Comments: "Male and female. I forget which sex has been continuing here. Both had big round heads with the highest point at the forehead, gradually sloping down back to the neck. I got good looks at the bills from head on and both birds showed wide nails. The male showed primarily green iridescence to the head, which isn’t diagnostic but supports Greater. Didn’t feel like taking out my camera, so no photos. Female was observed in direct comparison with female Redhead and Lesser, which gave a good idea of the head shape even though they were diving"

The two dove species were easily distinguished, with White-winged showing conspicuous white on lower edge of folded wing. Both doves feeding on sunflower seeds below feeders. Home backs up onto west portion of Coronado Butterfly Preserve, between Newport Dr. and dry creek bed. Three photos posted."
